Media Network on Child Rights and Development

About Us

The Media Network on Child Rights and Development (MNCRD) is a dynamic, membership driven, media association dedicated to sensitizing and equipping the media, civil society, and children to promote child rights and development issues. It works with government, civil society, cooperating partners, children, and journalists to ensure that voices of children and their issues are echoed through the media to achieve policy change and implementation.

Our History

The idea to form the Media Network on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (MNOVC) was conceived in 2002 at a media breakfast hosted for media heads by Care International’s Strengthening Community Partnerships for Empowerment of Orphans and Vulnerable children (SCOPE-OVC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development and Social Services in 2003. One of the chairing permanent secretaries suggested the formation of a network to sustain coverage of children. An interim committee comprising of late journalist Singy Hanyona, Chris Wapamesa (Zambia News and Information Services  – ZANIS), Rosaria Lubumbashi (ZANIS), Brenda Zulu ( Today Newspaper) and Felix Kunda (SCOPE-OVC) was formed. The network registered in 2003 as a Non-Governmental Organisation under the Registrar of Societies. Initial Funders were SCOPE-OVC, Firelight Foundation, Commonwealth Education Fund (CEF), Zambia National AIDS Network (ZNAN), UNICEF and the Department of Child Development
